I have a confession. Whenever I look at houses in my city or think about buying a home I honestly have never had a “dream home” in mind. I simply like what I like. I know a lot of people have this particular image in their mind of what the perfect home looks like. Unfortunately that is not me. My wife on the other hand is VERY specific about her dream home. Hers has always been a mid-century modern home with lots of windows for natural lighting with retro architectural design. Some of her favorite designers are Cliff May, A. James Speyer and Frank Lloyd Wright. I think you would recognize Mr. Speyer’s work as the iconic home from the 1980s film “Ferris Bueler’s Day Off”.

I’m telling you this because last year she finally found the home see has always wanted. We weren’t even looking to buy at the moment, but she is always scrolling real estate websites for great offers. I guess you can call it a pastime of hers. Unexpectedly, there it was, the house of her dreams. It had only be on the market for 1 day, and it was only 5 minutes away from our last home. My wife actually fell in love with this particular house 4 years ago when we viewed a house 2 doors down during our last home search. I can’t even begin to tell you how excited she got when she saw the listing, and she was even more ecstatic after we toured the house with our agent.
“It’s perfect”, she said. And really it was. A single owner home which was extremely well maintained. It was amazing how it just seemed to preserved the era from which it was built. The gentleman that previously lived here was not only the owner but also the architect of the house. We learned during the buying process that he can also be credited with designing many other buildings in the city as well. I won’t go into any of the horrible details of our home buying process, but at the end of it all it’s finally ours. And that my friends is how you make the Happy Wife portion of “Happy wife! Happy Life!”
I am also very happy with the house, but do you know what this means for me? A new honey-do list that is a mile long. That’s alright by me because I do love myself some DIY projects. Honestly, it will be fun making this beautiful house into the home that we can love and cherish.
Once we had everything moved in we got started working our changes right away. It wasn’t ’til later that I decided to blog about all the changes we were making to house. So consider this post as a beginning view of the house. Here are a few photos from the real estate website.
I can’t wait to show you the changes we have made so far. Now you can join us on the journey of making this house our home, and we will post both new and finished projects as we go. Come back to see us so you can watch the renovation progress, and hopefully it will inspire you to change things around your home and yard as well.
